About our Maine Coast Delft Tiles

Many years ago, a retired sailor asked me to create tiles for his fireplace. He admired the traditional Dutch blue Delft tiles but wanted Maine themes, lighthouses and a few of his own boats. The result was very meaningful to him and his family and I have been painting these special tiles ever since. Let me create a custom project for you too!

I have painted many subjects over the years and can work with you on measuring and design. These tiles are painted to order so please allow 6-8 weeks to completion. More complex orders will take longer and need to be scheduled in advance.

I work on commercially produced tiles which measure 6″x 6″ and are 1/4 ” thick. Customers like the uniformity of size because of predictable spacing and compatibility with other field tiles. The brushwork is hand painted directly onto the unfired glaze. During firing to 1856 degrees F. the design melts into the glaze to form a permanent surface which cannot be scrubbed off. This is a true fired ceramic tile and is produced without stencils or decals. Each tile will vary from those featured on the web site.

As durable as they are, we do not recommend them for areas of high foot traffic. They are suitable for fireplace, spa, shower and bath surrounds, as well as kitchen back splashes.

On request, we will give you a quote for matching tiles that include bullnose, odd sizes, plain with delft corners and what ever the project requires.

Plain white tiles of many dimensions are available from commercial tile retailers. Daltile #0100-white semi gloss tiles are a good match for my glaze and can lower the cost of your installation.

I am very comfortable working with clients by email and text messaging. I often paint a draft of the design and email the image for your approval. Get in touch with me to discuss your ideas!
