Each piece is hand thrown on the potter’s wheel or hand built using rolled out clay formed over wooden molds. We choose white earthenware because it allows us to use a wide range of color which typically burns out at higher firing temperatures. Careful brush work is the hallmark of our work!
After drying, pieces are bisque fired to 1900 degrees F. Our lead free glaze which we mix ourselves, is applied by pouring or dipping. The brush work is hand painted over the unfired glaze, which is similar to painting over chalk, Mistakes are hard to correct. No stencils or decals are used. The pottery is fired the second time to 1856 F.
This is a majolica technique which originated in the Middle East and spread throughout the Mediterranean and Europe. Inspired by the high fires pottery of China, artisans used their local materials to mimic the blue on white porcelain. Italian Renascence pottery, French faience and Delft pottery all have their roots in this tradition. Spain brought this technique to central America in the early 16th century. We love the warm, painterly, casual look and never tire of it’s design possibilities!
Be kind to your pottery! It is lead free and can be used in the microwave but don’t overheat. Be aware that your pottery may be warmer to the touch than commercial ware. It’s OK to put it in the dishwasher but handle with care to avoid chipping. Over time strong detergent can etch the glaze, however our family has many old pieces that have held up well after many years in the dishwasher. our pottery can be used in the oven taking care not to shock the piece with rapid temperature changes.
Despite these cautions, your pottery is meant to be used and enjoyed!
